The Grain

by Lanny Patrick

Swimming in a pool of emotional syrup

Hands tied and feet in the stirrups

Voice fading and movements choppy

Lemon of a brain playing cognitive jalopy

A sailor out of seas to sail

Angels drop to their knees to wail

A pawn who promised to pave the way

No longer allowed to save the day

Blown away by our own anecdotes

Flowing poison without an antidote

In mirrors we watch ugliness grow

Enjoying the self-pity as the tears flow

Now there’s no more noise, no movement

No apparent plan for self-improvement

Things are indeed as they seem in dreams

Vying for a spot on the winning team.
